Inspired by contemporary Danish architecture, this modular chair explores how the combination of flat-pack construction and adaptable seating can improve spatial efficiency through the use of traditional Scandinavian materials and techniques.

Context
DIS Study Abroad offers international students opportunities to engage in a wide range of academic and cultural experiences in Scandinavia. Among these opportunities is an intensive six-week furniture design studio in Copenhagen, which immerses students in Denmark’s design heritage through studio instruction, workshops, study tours, and exposure to traditional Scandinavian craftsmanship. This project was completed during the Summer 2025 session.

Ideation
Guided by Danish design principles associated with simplicity, the goal of this chair was to create a seating solution that was easy to transport and assemble, all while improving spatial efficiency. During the second week of the studio, my class went on a study tour where we visited design museums and studios across Sweden and Denmark, including firms like Blå Station and Husqvarna.

The final product delivered a modular seating solution that displayed traditional Danish design principles and fabrication techniques. This project highlights how adaptable furniture combined with flat-pack construction can create a functional yet versatile piece, all while reinforcing values of thoughtful material usage and human-centered design.
The form of the design was inspired by the slatting seen in contemporary Danish architecture, while the observations and experiences from the study tour informed the development of a modular flat-pack chair made from only three main components. This approach made it possible to develop a seating solution that achieved all the project's design goals.

Fabrication
The design is crafted from ash wood, and features a seat of 13 planed and sanded slats separated with stainless steel washers. Two crossbars with 12 dowels secure every other slat together, allowing the chair to function as both a stool and a lounge chair. The legs are constructed using domino joints, and are attached to the seat using only four removable screws and eight removable dowels. The wood is sealed with natural beeswax for protection against moisture.
